Welcome to Tribe Vets summer newsletter! Here are some seasonal top tips to keep your pets happy and healthy this summer.
🟦 Blue-Green Algae – A Hidden Danger in Lakes & Ponds
This often toxic algae appears in still water during hot weather. It looks like a foamy scum on the surface of water, especially near the edge. Even a quick paddle or lick can be fatal to dogs, so keep them out!
Warning signs: Vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, weakness, drooling, breathing issues
🚫 Avoid any suspicious-looking water (often green, foamy, or scummy)
🐝 Bee & Wasp Stings – Swell Happens!
Common in curious cats and dogs who like to chase insects.
🐶 Most stings are mild, but if your pet is stung on the face, throat or has trouble breathing, call us urgently.
💡 Top tip: Apply a cold compress and monitor for allergic reactions (vomiting, swelling, restlessness).
🌡️ Heatstroke – It Can Happen Fast
Dogs can't sweat like we do. Even 20°C can be risky, especially for flat-faced breeds.
Early signs: Panting, drooling, red gums, vomiting
Emergency signs: Collapse, seizures, confusion
❌ Never walk dogs in the heat of the day
🚗 Never leave pets in cars – not even for a minute
🪳 Fleas, Ticks & Other Creepy Crawlies
Warmer weather = perfect breeding time

🐾 Ticks carry Lyme disease – check your pet after walks, especially in grassy areas
✈️ Jetting Off? Staycationing?
Whether you're heading abroad or staying local:
📋 Travelling to the EU? Your pet now needs an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) – this is done via a mobile AHC vet. Make sure you book this as soon as you know your travel dates.
🏡 Using a pet sitter or kennels? Ensure vaccinations and parasite treatments are up to date; remember Kennel Cough needs time to work - check with your kennels about timescales
🎒 Pack their essentials: food, meds, lead, favourite toy or blanket, and an ID tag
