Keeping Your Dog Happy at Home: Fun Enrichment Ideas for Hot Summer Days

When the temperature rises, it's tempting to think our dogs are missing out if we can't take them on their usual long walks. The truth is, during very hot weather, less walking can actually be the safest choice.

Dogs don't just need physical exercise - they also need mental stimulation. In fact, 15–20 minutes of brain work can be just as tiring as a much longer walk. Keeping your dog's mind busy can help prevent boredom, reduce unwanted behaviours, and strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

Here are some of our favourite ways to keep dogs entertained while staying cool at home.

🐾 1. Snuffle Mats and Scatter Feeding

Instead of serving breakfast in a bowl, hide your dog's kibble in a snuffle mat or scatter it around the garden or house for them to sniff out.

Dogs naturally love using their noses, and sniffing is mentally exhausting in the best possible way.

No snuffle mat? Simply roll treats inside a towel or hide them in cardboard boxes for your dog to investigate.

🧊 2. Frozen Treats

Cooling enrichment is perfect for warm days.

Try freezing:

  • Low-salt chicken broth (no onions or garlic!)
  • Small pieces of carrot
  • Blueberries
  • Apple slices (without the seeds)
  • Watermelon (seedless)
  • Your dog's favourite treats inside ice cubes

You can also freeze wet food, mashed banana (in moderation), or plain dog-safe yoghurt inside a Kong or similar toy to keep them occupied for much longer.

🧠 3. Puzzle Feeders

Puzzle toys encourage dogs to solve problems in order to earn a tasty reward.

They come in lots of difficulty levels, making them suitable for puppies through to senior dogs. Start with an easy one and gradually increase the challenge as your dog gets the hang of it.

👃 4. Scent Games

A dog's sense of smell is extraordinary, so why not put it to work?

Hide a few treats around one room and encourage your dog to "Find it!"

As they become experts, make the hiding places more challenging or use favourite toys instead of food.

🎾 5. Teach a New Trick

Learning doesn't stop once puppyhood ends.

Try teaching:

  • Spin
  • High five
  • Roll over
  • Put toys away
  • Touch your hand with their nose
  • Go to bed on cue

Just five or ten minutes of positive training can leave your dog happily tired.

📦 6. The Cardboard Box Challenge

Before recycling your delivery boxes, let your dog enjoy them!

Place treats inside a cardboard box with scrunched-up paper or empty toilet roll tubes and let them investigate.

Just remember to supervise, especially if your dog enjoys eating cardboard rather than simply shredding it!

🫧 7. Bubble Chasing

Did you know you can buy dog-safe bubbles?

Many dogs absolutely love chasing and popping bubbles around the garden during the cooler parts of the day. It's great fun for the whole family.

🌿 8. Make a Doggy Dig Box

If your dog loves digging, create a dedicated digging area using a shallow box or small paddling pool filled with sand or soil. Hide toys or treats underneath and let them enjoy digging to find their treasure.

💦 9. Water Play

Not every dog enjoys swimming, but many love splashing around.

A paddling pool, gentle sprinkler or even a hose set to a light mist can provide plenty of entertainment while helping your dog stay cool (just check hose-pipe bans in your area first!).

Always allow your dog to choose whether they want to join in - never force them into water.

❤️ Remember…

On very hot days, it's perfectly okay to swap a long walk for a day of enrichment at home. Your dog won't mind nearly as much as you think!

Instead, walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler, make sure plenty of fresh water is always available, and never leave your dog in a parked car - even for a few minutes.

A happy dog isn't simply one that's walked for miles. It's one whose body and mind are both cared for.
