Autumn Newsletter
Autumn has arrived with crisp mornings, golden leaves, and cosy evenings - and while it’s a beautiful season, it does bring a few extra things to watch out for with our pets. From Halloween treats to Fireworks Night advice, we’re here to help keep your beloved pets safe, happy, and healthy this autumn.
Seasonal Health Advice
- Halloween hazards: Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs and cats, and even small amounts can cause serious illness. Keep sweets and wrappers well out of reach!
- Fireworks season: With Bonfire Night approaching, many pets will feel anxious. Preparing in advance can help:
- Create a safe, quiet den indoors.
- Close curtains and use background noise such as TV or radio.
- Walk dogs before dark.
- Speak to us about pheromone diffusers, supplements, or medication if your pet struggles with noise anxiety, or see our blog for more information.
- Autumn Poisons: Acorns, conkers and rotting fruit can all cause an upset tummy, and can potentially cause blockages of the stomach or intestines, or even poisoning. Best to avoid!
- Continuing tick prevention: Ticks remain active well into the colder months. Ongoing parasite prevention is essential to protect your pet from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
- Antifreeze poisoning: Cats are particularly vulnerable, as antifreeze is sweet-tasting but highly toxic. Store all products safely, clean up any spills immediately, and avoid leaving open containers where pets can access them.
- Cold weather care: Older pets may struggle in the chill. Soft bedding, jackets or coats, draught-free sleeping areas, and gentle exercise can help keep them comfortable. Speak to us if you feel your pet’s arthritis is worsening in the cold.
