Parasite Control for Pets: Why It Matters as the Weather Warms Up

A person closely inspecting a dog's ear for signs of health or irritation.

As temperatures begin to rise across West Oxfordshire, we also see the start of something less welcome - parasite season.

Spring and early summer create the perfect conditions for fleas, ticks, and worms to thrive. If your pet hasn’t been on consistent preventative treatment over winter, now is the time to review their parasite protection.

🐜 Why Do Parasites Increase in Warmer Weather?

Parasites become more active as temperatures climb above around 7°C. Milder winters in the UK mean they’re often present year-round, but spring marks a significant surge in activity.

Warmer conditions mean:

  • Flea eggs hatch more quickly
  • Ticks become active in grassland and woodland
  • Worm transmission increases
  • Wildlife interaction rises

Outdoor pets, and even indoor cats, are at risk.

🐾 The Main Parasites to Watch For

Fleas
Fleas can cause itching, skin infections and flea allergy dermatitis. They also lay eggs in your home environment, making infestations harder to control once established.

Ticks
Ticks are commonly picked up on countryside walks, particularly in rural Oxfordshire. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and cause local irritation or infection.

Worms
Roundworms, tapeworms and lungworm are ongoing risks for our pets. Lungworm in dogs can be serious and even fatal, and is increasingly reported in the UK.

🩺 Why Prevention Is Better Than Treatment

Parasites are much easier to prevent than to treat once a problem develops.

Untreated infestations can lead to:

  • Skin infections
  • Anaemia (particularly in kittens and puppies)
  • Gastrointestinal upset
  • More complex health complications

Regular, vet-recommended parasite control is tailored to your pet’s lifestyle, age and risk level.

🐶🐱 Does My Pet Still Need Treatment If They Stay Indoors?

Yes - in many cases.

  • Fleas can be brought into the home on clothing.
  • Indoor cats can still be exposed to parasites via other pets.
  • Some worms are transmitted through fleas.

Lifestyle matters, but few pets are truly zero-risk.

💚 Personalised Parasite Advice at Home

At Tribe Mobile Vets, we believe parasite control shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach. During a home visit, we can:

  • Assess your pet’s individual risk
  • Recommend appropriate products
  • Check for early signs of skin or coat issues
  • Ensure dosing is correct and up to date

Home visits also allow us to discuss your pet’s routine and environment in a relaxed setting.

Spring Is the Time to Review Protection

If you’re unsure when your pet last received flea, tick or worm treatment, now is the ideal time to check. A simple preventative plan can avoid discomfort and more serious problems later in the year.
